MUSICAL:

Published works in the format commonly accepted as "Musical play" in the theatre arena are elligible for the NHTA Musical category.

A sequence of musical numbers loosely connected by introductions, commentary, or vignettes with no concurrent plot does not qualify as a musical play for the purposes of the NHTA. Musical revues, "revuesicals", and concerts with "themes" are not accepted as musicals for the purposes of the NHTA, regardless of previous publication.

(see NOTE below)

ORIGINAL:

An Original Drama/Comedy is eligible for adjudication in the NHTA Original category if it meets the following criteria:

  • The production must be, in the judgment of the NH Theatre Awards, a legitimate theatrical production
  • Work must be original material -- not translated, adapted, or updated from an existing play
  • Work must be unavailable through any publishing house
  • Work must never have been produced in New Hampshire

An Original Musical is eligible for adjudication in the NHTA Original category if it meets the criteria above AND additionally ALSO meets the following criteria:

  • A significant portion of the production must include music or singing
  • A majority of the music must be written by the creator or author of the play
  • The play must have a recognizable story line with characters played by actors who meet the requirements stated in the Best Actor/Actress categories
  • The songs and/or music must serve to propel the story and enhance character development
  • The play must be developed from original material. i.e. not translated, adapted or updated from a previously published musical. However, a new musical based on a published straight play or prose writings will qualify. (The production may contain elements that substantially duplicate elements of previously produced shows if, in the judgment of the NH Theatre Awards in each case, the duplicated and the original elements, in their totality, create a new musical.)

A sequence of musical numbers loosely connected by introductions, commentary, or vignettes with no concurrent plot does not qualify as an original musical. Musical revues, "revuesicals", concerts with "themes" or improvisational works are not considered to be original musicals.
